Ring lighting are a fantastic option to standard hot shoes flashguns. They work by lighting the topic from a mild that encompasses the lens rather than seated on top of the camera. The result is a clean even distribute of mild that enhances images and still life topics. A ring mild display will set you returning in excess of £200 – and this price quickly gets worse if you go for a labeled edition from Cannon or Nikon.

With the coming of high-powered LEDs, there are many continuous ring mild solutions such as the Sony models HVL-RL1, although this will still set you returning almost £300. The other option is to develop your own. In this venture I’ve used an ring mild designed for a parasol, and simply remodelled the gap where the rod goes through to create it wide enough for a lens to sit perfectly. The light itself price around £12 from a DIY store. In addition to the mild, you’ll also need an adaptor ring to attach onto your lens in order to hold the mild in place. I used a narrow ring adaptor that price £4.

How to create a ring light for less than £20

01 Take apart the ring light

Start by taking the mild apart. The lighting usually involve two segments that perspective to open up. Once started out, eliminate any of the electrics that’ll get in the way when reducing.

02 Cut an starting through the front

Use the narrow ring adaptor to indicate a reducing information. The aim is to create an starting with the same inner size as the adaptor. After reducing, sleek the sides with a data file.

03 Coordinate the starting on the back

The returning area of the ring mild needs to have an starting that suits that of the top side. Again use the adaptor ring to indicate out the size and expand the main gap.

04 Tense up the fit

As the unique segments that organised the product together have been eliminated, use levels of covering up record to develop up the overlap of the platform and top area for a cushty fit.

05 Protected the adaptor ring

Apply adhesive around the gap on the returning, then position the adaptor ring with the attach line experiencing up. You may also need to keep the on/off change inside the product.

06 Completing off

Once the adhesive is fully dry,  attach the platform with the adaptor ring onto your lens, change on the top side LED area and port this over the platform device. Now enjoy your ring light!
